Although she’s fairly young in her “practical experience,” a usually very poor section in the CVs of young Palestinian graduates, Abeer Abu Ghaith has probably experienced the full menu of unemployment, volunteering, employment, and entrepreneurship in less than five years after university graduation. Abeer’s is a very common story of growing up in a Palestinian refugee camp, finishing school with high grades, pursuing a bachelor’s degree and graduating with honours, and then going home unemployed! But for a young, female computer-engineering graduate who lives in a small town outside of Hebron, running a small start-up to sell services such as translation, graphic design, website development, online marketing, and data entry over the Web to the United States and the Gulf, this is not mainstream at all.
It’s an exciting time to be a woman, especially for Abeer Abu Ghaith. Now being referred to as the “first female high-tech entrepreneur” in the West Bank, this 29-year-old Palestinian trailblazer has taken her own culture and surrounding business-cultures by storm. Analysts project that this somewhat stagnant sector, before Abeer’s work in it, could double in size over the next five years and could employ up to thousands more— that being said, you go girl.
